More information, easier to scan

May272008

We’ve made some improvements in the last few days to how news is presented on EveryBlock.

The changes are most obvious on the location pages (what you get when you search for an address or browse to a particular neighborhood). These pages give you an overview of what’s going on in a particular area over the past few days. We’ve been adding a lot of new types of news to EveryBlock over the past few months and the amount of information on these pages was getting a little overwhelming. We wanted to make all that information easier to scan, and do a better job of giving a “feel” for the area at a glance.

One of the most noticable changes is how we display photos in the lists. We’ve added larger thumbnails and grouped photos together so you can see more detail with less scrolling. On the page for Wrigley Field in Chicago, you can always tell what day was a game day just by glancing at the photos.

We also grouped business reviews and sorted them by star rating. Instead of scanning through a long list of reviews for each day, now you can get a feel for what types of businesses are in the area and what people think of them.

We’ve also added color-coding to some types of news where it makes sense, like restaurant inspections. In all three cities, it’s much easier to scan a list of restaurant inspections and see which ones passed or failed.

These are just a few of the changes we’ve made along these lines. We’ve already noticed a big difference when we use the site, so expect to see more soon.

As always, please let us know if you have any suggestions or ideas for how we can make the site even better. Just send us a note through the contact form at the bottom of each EveryBlock page or by e-mail at feedback at everyblock.com.
