Introducing the EveryBlock partner API

Nov012010

Today we’re announcing the EveryBlock partner API — a new way for our content partners to deliver neighborhood news at the level of neighborhood or city block.

This API is designed to provide you with raw access to the latest neighborhood news on EveryBlock, across all of the cities we serve. Read our documentation for more information.

If you have any feedback on this API, or if you’d like an API key, please e-mail api@everyblock.com. You can also call me at 773-321-8146 to talk out the possible uses that you might have for this API. This is a “firehose” API that delivers up to 24 hours of news items across our 16 cities. Since we deal with a diversity of news that vary in kind and format from city to city, this API is intended to serve partners with heavy-duty needs and who can devote a goodly amount of development time to work with the data.

A lighter-weight alternative to the API is the EveryBlock widget. The widget allows you to configure simple copy-paste code to embed relevant local news on your Web site. You can show news at an exact address, a block-radius around an address, a specific neighborhood, or an entire zip code. You can tweak it to show just crime, or just crime and building permits, and so on. You can also choose exactly which media sources you’d like to display.

If you’re feeling good, and you want to make a single set of widget code work across a number of location pages on your site (say you’ve got a separate page for every neighborhood in the city), you can muck around with the code to pass a variable into the “location” field. See this example for the Chatham neighborhood in Chicago. This is a nice middle ground between the widget and the partner API.

We’re excited about people might build with the partner API. We’d love to hear from large publishers who are looking to highlight the diversity of our news, the up-to-the-moment recency, and the growing community of users who post news and information near them. We’re already working with a number of publishers and we’re excited to help get their projects launched with current EveryBlock news baked right in. Let us know what you think!
