Today, we've launched a new EveryBlock city: Portland, Oregon.
Portland has consistently been one of the most voted-for cities in our homepage poll, so we've always figured it was only a matter of time before we added it. But what helped make it happen was the City of Portland's new open data initiative, launched a few days ago, which resulted in the city releasing a number of local data sets to the public. We've been working with city agencies in Portland for several weeks to collect, analyze and organize the data they've published, and we're happy with the result.
For launch, our Portland site will notify you of building permits, crime, liquor license applications, restaurant inspections and 911 calls in your neighborhood. That's in addition to the great assortment of local news we organize in each EveryBlock city, including locations in the media, photos, business reviews, real estate listings and more. Also, as in our other cities, Portland residents can post neighborhood announcements.
We're particularly excited about how quickly we were able to set up this site, due to the cooperation of the City of Portland and the fact they opened some of their city data in the first place. More and more cities are joining the open-data movement, and we're excited to be there for them when they're ready to pull the trigger.
Take a look at our Portland site and please help us spread the word!
